In the book, "Rethinking Education in the age of Technology" Alan Collins and Richard Halverson describe a new breed of educational leaders who are willing to match what students are learning in the classroom with what is happening in society.
Instagram is a tool that can connect students' outside environment with what is happening in the classroom. Students love to snap pictures and it seems that every one of them has a camera enabled cell phone that is with them most of the time. Students can take pictures of the things and happenings around them to help with understanding lessons at school.
If students are studying geometry there are lots of examples of the different types of angles. If a lesson on environmental problems is on the student's mind than snapping pictures as examples is evident wherever they go. If poetry is the current unit in Language Arts anything in nature can me a muse for the next writing project. And the last video the class viewed of the President's State of the Union address in Social Studies has a student thinking politics so they can snap a few pictures of bumper stickers and posters around town to help with the class collage of images.
All of these photos can be taken and easily enhanced with one of Instagrams many filters to create a stunning image worth the attention of the teacher and fellow classmates.
