The fine people at Instagram have always loved playing around with cameras. In particular, those old polaroid cameras created an interesting look for pictures, and marketed them as 'instant.' They also felt like the pictures were a lot like telegrams as they were sent over the wire to friends, family, and colleagues. Instagram decided to combine the two, and now you have one of the world's leading photo sharing platforms.
