Too many students are not taught how to reserch for their writing, and then how to share it so that others can read it. Yes, students walk down to the library and shown how to check out a book. And, yes, students often stand in the front of the classroom and read their work aloud. But, how often do students connect with doctors who write about the diseases students study in Science class, search the profile of an author to see what other books they recommend besides their own, or read a blog from another student in a country far away?
How often do students prep the paper they've written to submit to an Online journal or magazine, self publish an eBook using some of the new Web 2.0 tools available (Scribd, SlideShare, CreateSpace), or have a printed and binded copy sent to the Library of Congress?
We spent more than a decade focusing on the writing process, but don't spend enough time teaching students the other sides, namely research and publishing.
