Flickr in the Classroom

If a picture is worth a thousand words, than how many is 6 billion pictures? According to Yahoo!, the company that purchased Flickr in 2005, that's how many images have been uploaded to the site.

With this many images, most of which are shared with a Creative Commons license, there is rarely a shortage of photos that describe any topic covered in a classroom. With the option of tagging photos there are great opportunities for learning with all the images on Flickr.

Here are a few examples:
  • Find photos for presentations
  • Join a Flickr community to get updates on specific topics
  • Create a slideshow of student projects
  • Use images as writing prompts, or start class
  • Create virtual field trips
  • Create digital posters for class display
  • Embed your photo slideshow on the class website
  • Students post pictures to the class account of the steps in creating a project
  • Share photos of your favorite things
  • Find photos of all the places you would like to visit
  • Create a photo community of similar classrooms throughout the world

There are many more uses of Flickr in the classroom, but we leave that up to you and your students. When you come up with a great idea, leave us a comment and describe what you've done.
