Social Media and Teachers

Many teachers are reluctant to use Social Media in the classroom. The reasons include; low self esteem, lack of training, minimal support, and ambiguous policy. The truth be told, teachers exist a job with little or no incentive.

Trying something new is risky, and the punishment for a failed attempt can be steep. If you do succeed, other teachers aren't always happy because they may be forced in to doing the same thing. It's the old story about the bucket full of crabs; one sees daylight from the bottom of the bucket, and just as he's clawing his way out another crab pulls him back in.

Over the years teachers have become isolated in their own classroom. Shut in by walls and doors with little communication from the outside world. Teachers find themselves reverting back to old fashioned teaching techniques that are 'safe' and without risk.

Social Media is a way out of the bottom of the bucket. Instead of being pulled back in to the old way of doing things, there are others outside the bucket who are trying new things. After succeeding they're eager to share the how and why of what they accomplished. Published so that others can imitate and duplicate what they've done.

There are lots of people and resources out there that connect you with other successful educators. Starting with these 3 will lead you in the right direction:

1. The Educator's PLN: Dedicated to the support of a Personal Learning Network for Teachers.
2. 21st Century Classroom: Non-profit organization that helps teachers reach students.
3. The Connected Classroom: A wiki for teachers interested in 21st century teaching skills.
