Facebook, launched in February 2004 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerburg, is a social networking service and website that allows users to create a personal profile, add other users as friends, send and receive messages, video chat, and more.
The site was originally started for Harvard students, but gradually expanded to other colleges and universities and then the general public. Today, there are over 750 million subscribers.
One aspect that isn't well known is after Facebook moved into other colleges and universities, Zuckerburg created a high school version which he said was the, "next logical step," after higher education.
In the last few years, Facebook has seen a significant redesign, the ability to create pages around popular businesses and celebrities (and more), new messaging system, and video chat capabilities.
In 2011, FB (Facebook) for Educators was launched, with the help of several teachers to, "provide additional educational tools that use the environment that kids are drawn to."
To help users understand how to use the resource, a Facebook for Educators User Guide can be downloaded from the Handouts Tab of their page.
