Google

Google is company next to our own hearts. Not only is it something we use, encourage, and teach, but it was started by two PhD students. While attending Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were working together on a research project funded by the National Science Foundation. They wanted to study the mathematical properties of the Internet and its linking system.

Larry and Sergey looked at measuring the importance of webpages on the Internet. They created an algorithm to list websites in order of importance, and called it Google, a misspelling of the word 'googol,' which refers to the number 1 followed by one-hundred zeroes. The first edition of Google was added to Stanford's website with the designation google.stanford.edu (which remains today, Google it!).

Google.com was registered on September 15, 1997 and has become something we do, not just a website. Whenever we're unsure of something, we simply 'Google' it. In fact, 'google' was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006. The definition reads, "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet."
