So You Want to Teach?

As a PhD student and Teaching Assistant there are two classes I help with. One of them involves student teaching this semester. Students have created their own blogs and began posting their thoughts and experiences. How interesting! It seems like only yesterday that the non-stop schedule, mismanaged classroom, reflection overdosed, dog tired days were a new experience. Reading the students' posts reminds me of a blog from SoYouWantToTeach.com about the 10 Things I Wish Someone Had Explained Before Starting My First Job. Read the article for more details, but the 10 Things include:
  1. Get a handle on classroom management early.
  2. Learn from experience of other teachers.
  3. Have fun.
  4. Read non-fiction
  5. Start a Blog now!
  6. Establish a small circle of teacher friends.
  7. Don't buy more than you can afford.
  8. Don't let work take over your life.
  9. Avoid stress and burnout like the plague.
  10. Set aside personal time.
