The challenge with Social Networks like Facebook is that students are either too young (need to be 13 to create and account) or schools ban them. Students want to connect online, but we make it difficult to do so.
Mahara is a resource that help. It's an ePortfolio and Social Networking software package that schools can use to allow students to connect and share online. It also serves as a tool for students to build a portfolio of their work to carry with them throughout their school career and beyond.
We often say to ourselves, "I remember writing a really good paper back in high school, but I don't remember where I put it," or, "I created a great Science project in middle school, but I wish I had pictures of it." Mahara is a way to document all student work online. This makes it easy to apply for college, scholarships, internship opportunities, jobs, and more. Students can bring their entire body of work with them wherever they go.
