This week the new Avengers movie opened in theaters. Admittedly I was one of the first to buy tickets. I didn't go completely crazy and go to one of the midnight showings, but was one of the first to arrive for the 6:15 pm show. There's just something about superhero movies.

This time in the school year calls for teachers to be superheroes. Students can smell the summer coming and the sunlight does something to their bodies to cause malfunctions just as lessons start. They need superhero strength, exceptional sight, and incredible patience.

But keep at it, this time can be some of the best all year. Students begin to realize they won't be in the same room next year, They'll have different teachers and new schedules. As much as they talk about getting out and moving on, many students are scared. Young people search for safety and structure. As their teacher you give it to them.

This time of year can afford some stray from the normal lessons, where discussion can open up and feelings can be shared. This is where a teacher can make a huge impact on what students will do over the summer and for the rest of their lives. Suggesting a certain book, activity, or area of interest can really spark something.

Don't take these last few days of the school year for granted. Even though you may be able to smell the summer coming, and the sunlight does something to your functioning, you still have some quality time with your students.
