Whether you create websites, documents, or media, CC allows you to place an icon/badge inside of your work so that readers/viewers understand how you would like the work shared. Some creators don't want their work to be seen by anyone outside of a small group, another creator may want everyone to see their work, but not to change it in any way. Still others freely share and ask others to use their work however they see fit, including changing it.
For example, a veteran filmaker may want to share a piece of film with a class, but not anyone else. CC allows the filmaker to place an icon on the film to let the viewers know. A student scriptwriter may want to share his newest movie idea with anyone who visits his website, but asks anyone who reads it not to change anything. Lastly, a high school senior has created, what he thinks, is next great song beat with his laptop, and wants to share it with anyone that will listen. Additionally, he wants listeners to know that they can take (download), change (remix), and use his song any way they want. He places a CC icon on his website next to the song link so everyone that wants the song knows it is free to use however the person wants.
