LibriVox- Read And Listen To Public Domain Books

Reading isn't the same. Traditionally, you go to the library, pick out a book from the stack, read it, and bring it back. Rinse and repeat.

With the available technology and speed of information transfer, reading is changing. Books aren't just on paper pages anymore. They're on computer screens, handheld devices, and recorded as audio to be played on iPods and iPhones.

Since we're all so busy, listening to your favorite book while traveling to the next destination, can be an alternative to sitting and reading from the page. And we have to admit, listening to someone read a book has a certain magic to it. You almost get to listen to two stories at once. The author's voice and choice of emphasis on certain words, phrases, or sections tells you about them.

Since getting an iPhone, listening to books while traveling has opened up a whole new world. And finding sites that offer free content has been a breeze. Since there are so many books in the public domain and lots of people donating their time to read and record the books, there's tons of content out there.

One site that's great is LibriVox.org. They have a ton of public domain books read and recorded by some great authors. So far, we've listened to Sun Tzu's The Art of War, Walden by Henry David Thoreau, and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. We're in the process of deciding which to read next, Sherlock Holmes, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Rodinson Crusoe, or something else. If you have some suggestions, please send them our way!

But if you have a chance and your iPod or iPhone are ready, check out LibriVox.org and search for some great books to 'read.'
