8 Things To Do Instead Of Watching TV

A recent Nielson survey revealed that the average American spent 143 hours watching TV in the third quarter of 2010. That's a lot of time in front of the tube!

Since summer is closely approaching and schools are soon to let out, it may be a good time to start talking about what to do with the time off from the classroom. Instead of sitting in front of the TV watching Jerry Springer or Judge Judy all summer, here are 8 Things To Do Instead Of Watching TV according to Good Culture:

1. Exercise= An hour of jogging each day burns 584 calories. If the average american spent the same 143 jogging they could theoretically lose 24 pounds in a month.

2. Build a house= Habitat for Humanity says it typically takes 12 people about 16 days (128 hours) to build a working and useful home for the needy.

3. Scuba certification= Get to know what's in the sea, it only takes three or four days to get full certification. You'll have 100 hours left over for TV watching.

4. Become a Yoga instructor= Some Yoga gyms have a 200-hour Yoga teacher certification course. That's health and some possible side income in one!

5. Learn a new language= Software like the popular program, Rosetta Stone says it takes about 40-50 hours to complete each of the 5 levels in their program. You could reach at least level 3 in 143 hours, which is enough to enjoy social interactions in the new language.

6. Read the Bible= It's said to take 77 hours and 22 minutes to listen to the bible on CD. If you're a slow reader like me, you have about a sixty hour gap to get to 143. Should be doable!

7. Volunteer= There are more than 12,000 volunteer opportunities listed on Idealist.org. Many of them are near your home!

8. Write a movie about your life= There are stories of directors writing entire movie scripts in a span of days. So find some scripting writing software and tell your story on the big screen!

If you decide none of these are for you, its ok, there are plenty of other things you can do with your time besides watch TV, but how fun would it be to try some new adventures this summer! If anything, encourage your kids or students to do some of these, it just might inspire you to do something you've never done before! How about that backpacking trip across Europe you've always talked about!!!
